Tobacco giant BAT returns to TV ads

BIG TOBACCO is to return to advertising on British television for the first time in decades.

British American Tobacco will launch a campaign this week for its Vype electronic cigarettes. It will mark the first time a big tobacco company has marketed products on TV since cigar advertisements were banned in 1991. Cigarette ads have been barred since 1965.

Vype has been on sale for six months and represents BAT’s first foray into the fast-growing ecigarette market. The brand is run by a subsidiary, Nicoventures, set up to handle BAT’s interests in alternatives to traditional cigarettes. Its ads will be shown only after the 9pm watershed.
